The Languedoc-Roussillon area guide
Things to do
Sat in the south westerly tip of France, Languedoc-Roussillon borders French regions, Spain and Andorra. The region is known for its charismatic natural beauty, intriguing past and delicious wine. In fact, sprawling vineyards dominate the fertile soil and luscious green landscape and Languedoc-Roussillon was, at one glorious point, the worlds largest wine producer.
The region is comprised of five departments: Lozère, Gard, Hérault, Aude and Pyrénées-Orientales. Each department has its own distinct identity and scenery, and all but Lozère are graced with coastal plain. Lozere, however, is an adventure junkie's playground. The Gorges du Tarn (a canyon), for one, is a magnificent area of raw beauty longing to be explored.
Whether you wish to frolic in the sun-drenched beaches in one of the many seaside resorts dotted along the coast like Sète in Herault, trek further inland to tackle either the Pyrenees or Cevennes mountain range, or marvel at historical wonders of years gone by, Languedoc-Roussillon allows you to do so.
Such varied land and seascapes are rarely offered elsewhere and present you with the best of both worlds relaxing sandy beaches and snow-capped mountains perfect for skiing. A quiet village life away from tourist hotspots like Banyuls and the perks of living in a big city like Montpellier.
Places to eat
French cuisine is revered worldwide. In Languedoc-Roussillon, the fare is exquisite. As the region is adjacent to the gorgeous coastline, fresh fish and seafood is plentiful and thanks to the exceptionally fertile soil all manner of produce is grown and utilised here.
The best way to explore the tastes of this beautiful French region is via frequenting a local outdoor market. Here, you can witness first hand, the gorgeous crops carefully plucked out by farmers and the high-quality meat that locals purchase week in, week out.
Another way to explore the regions cuisine is, of course, via visiting a local eatery. From local taverns to upscale restaurants. From humble back street spots to extravagant hilltop venues. Youll be able to find a diner in any of the five departments to suit all occasions, tastes and wallets. A few restaurants of note include Le Resthau in Meze and Domaine Gayda near Limoux, Carcassonne. If you wish to get your moneys worth and leave utterly satisfied, make sure you pay a visit to at least one of these esteemed venues.
And, of course, a meal wouldnt be complete if it wasnt accompanied by a glass of chilled wine the only difficulty will be deciding which type to go for!
Shopping
When it comes to shopping, youll be pleasantly surprised with Languedoc- Roussillons offering. Whether its high fashion or bargain finds. Antiquities or modern wares, youll be able to find a store pleasing your needs. Like the rest of the world, major shopping complexes and districts are usually found in the major cities and towns like Montpellier, Nimes, Narbonne, Sete and Perpignan.
Here, youll be able to peruse through well-known fashion houses, French chains, quirky independent boutiques and craft stores. Supermarkets such as Champion and Intermarche can also be found in these parts.
However, a mandatory stop for any who wish to live here, is a visit to one of the lively local markets held around the region - whether its a flea, farmers or food market, the experience is like no other and enables you to get a true sense of life in Languedoc-Roussillon.
Getting there & around
Transport in Languedoc-Roussillon is reliable and convenient. To get into the region, the easiest way would be either via train or plane. The Eurostar takes you from London to Montpellier in just over 5 hours and budget charter flights fly into many of the major cities like Carcassonne and Avignon. There are also numerous ports along the coastline, if you prefer coming via ferry to France. Though the journey time may be longer, the picturesque voyage is more than worth it. Another lengthy option is, of course, travelling by car this option also rewards you with jaw-dropping vistas en route.
Once safely in the region, you can rely on the train or bus service to travel between departments and to other European countries. The bus is also great for transporting you around the local department and the city or town. The best method of travel, however, is via car. This offers you unrestrained, private travel so that you can explore more of what Languedoc-Roussillon has to offer at your own pace.
