The Murcia area guide

Things to do

The city of Murcia can be found in south-east Spain and is the capital of the region (of the same name) it belongs to. One of Spain’s largest cities, it is equally known for its Universities as it is for its art, history and agricultural traditions. And as a known exporter of fruit, vegetables and other crops, it has coined the nickname Europe’s Orchard.

Set in an area of breath-taking natural beauty, visitors can explore mountain ranges, Spain’s largest lake, the ocean, a plethora of golf courses, and sandy beaches. With a history stretching back for over a thousand years and an eclectic mixture of architectural styles and cuisines, Murcia offers some of the best of Spain.

The central square of Murcia is something of a hub for the city, surrounded by some of its most incredible buildings and facades, as well as boasting side-streets filled with boutiques, restaurants and cafes. However, the most impressive building of the city, though many individuals have their own personal favourites, is the Cathedral of Murcia. Built upon a ruined mosque after the cities conquering from its Moorish founders, it took nearly three hundred years to complete. The time spent building the Cathedral, alongside the numerous additions over the centuries, have created a building that celebrates the best of three distinct architectural schools. From Renaissance to Gothic and Baroque; no matter where you look you are sure to be inspired and awed by the masonry before your eyes.

The countryside also holds a bounty of its own, not only in the agricultural products of the region but in its golf courses and vineyards. Alongside the interspersed castles of the area, it hosts Spain’s largest lake, which is perfect for those seeking a range of water sports and boating excursions.

Places to eat

La Taperia de la Huerta is one of Murcia’s best tapas restaurants, which is certainly saying something when you consider quite how renowned Spain is for its tapas. Its croquettes are particularly good. For this reason, the venue is often jam-packed with tourists as well as local Spaniards, who often return to the diner to experience more of the delightful cuisine.

La Cabana is more known for its a la carte menu, though in a city known for tapas, it’s certainly worth visiting. Expect to see the chef himself mingling with guests and expect the excellent service to only be outdone by the food itself.

For something a little bit different to the superb Mediterranean food to be found, try visiting the Pizzeria known as Mano A Mano. With a traditional Nepalese flair to the pizza, it’s equally enjoyable whether eating in, or getting it to go to enjoy somewhere in the city.

Shopping

In keeping with it being one of the most popular destinations in Spain and one of the largest cities, the shopping in Murcia is on par with many a global city. With highbrow fashion houses, more traditional High Street boutiques and small independent stores, the shopping leaves nothing to be desired. Whether walking down its streets, visiting one of the city’s malls, or going to one of the weekly markets, there’s always some new treasure to catch your eye.

However, frequenting a market is highly recommended as they usually sell all manner of items. Not only can you bag yourself a great gem, you can experience the culture first-hand as well as mingle with the locals.

Getting there & around

Two airports can be found in the region, with one located near San Javier, 28 miles from Murcia, and the other in Alicante. Bus and train services are available throughout the region and connect to the other cities in the area, as well as Europe at large. Car hire services are available at the airports, as well as in the city itself, whilst taxi services are both sophisticated and easily available.
