Designed by Amin Taha of Groupwork and shortlisted for the 2017 riba Stirling Prize, Spruce Apartments is a building of six homes on Barrett’s Grove, a Victorian street on the edge of Dalston and Stoke Newington, within the Dalston conservation area. The building has been widely published in Dezeen, the Architects’ Journal and Dwell.

This two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment extends to 777 sq ft on the third floor, with the cross-laminated timber left exposed throughout. The plan turns off a central entrance hall: The reception runs to nearly twenty feet, with the kitchen set along one wall in white Corian, Smeg appliances and a Gorenje induction hob built in, Fisher & Paykel dishwashers tucked beneath the worktop.

A banquette runs along one side against a charcoal backdrop, with deep window seats cut into the timber and upholstered in ochre wool. The wicker-panelled balcony projects from the façade, screened on all sides in woven willow. Floor-to-ceiling doors recess flush into the walls when open, and bespoke cabinetry is built into every room. Two bedrooms sit on the opposite side of the plan, each served by its own bathroom.

Barrett’s Grove sits between Dalston and Stoke Newington, a short walk from Newington Green. Kingsland Road carries the independent food and music scene south towards Dalston Junction, and Church Street to the north has its own strong pull of cafes, delis and pubs, running between Clissold Park and Abney Park Cemetery, one of London’s Magnificent Seven. The Overground runs from both Dalston Kingsland and Dalston Junction, while Rectory Road reaches Liverpool Street in under fifteen minutes
