About Canterbury
Canterbury is one of England's most historic cathedral cities, set in the east Kent countryside and surrounded by the Kent Downs. Its centrepiece is Canterbury Cathedral, the mother church of the Anglican Communion and part of a unesco World Heritage Site that also includes St Augustine's Abbey and St Martin's Church. The city is also known through Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, and its medieval streets, timber-framed buildings, riverside gardens and parts of the old city walls remain a big draw for residents and visitors.
Despite its heritage, Canterbury is a lively, modern city. The historic centre has a good mix of independent shops, high street names, cafés, pubs and restaurants, plus a weekly programme of events and festivals. The Marlowe Theatre and a number of galleries and museums add to the cultural scene. The punting trips on the River Stour and the green space at Westgate Gardens are popular in warmer months.
Transport links are strong. Canterbury West has high-speed rail services to London St Pancras in around an hour, and Canterbury East connects to London Victoria and the Kent coast. The coastal towns of Whitstable, Herne Bay and Broadstairs, the Port of Dover and the Channel Tunnel are all within easy reach by road or rail.
