The local area guide to living in Borough

After the rapid and dazzling rise in London house prices over the past 10 to 20 years, it's hard to imagine any central districts being available to ordinary buyers today. However, this is not always the case and Borough, one of London's oldest districts, is still an option for many people.

Like many of the older parts of London, Borough has a rich and varied history. Today, it is one of the most relaxed, yet vibrant parts of the city. It remains a historic, almost rural area whilst still offering plenty of culture and intrigue - most notably in the busy Borough Market.

Despite the cobbled streets and ancient pubs, Borough has fantastic connections to the rest of London, and most of central London is an easy walk away. Just west along the river is The Globe theatre and the Tate Modern, whilst the other way is The Shard and Tower Bridge.

Information about the local residents

Borough belongs to the London Borough of Southwark. Southwark, just north of Peckham, Brixton and Camberwell, is a culturally and ethnically diverse area.

Borough itself is more commonly home to young professionals working in central London, although they are by no means dominant. There is also a thriving creative and artist community.

Nearby schools

There are not many schools within the district of Borough, with much of the larger plots of land taken up by businesses. However, South London as a whole has plenty of primary and secondary schools, and academies with good reputations. Bermondsey to the east has several, as well as Peckham to the south. There are also several high-performing private and public schools within relatively easy reach.

Getting around

As you'd expect of a central London district, transport is fantastic for residents of Borough. With London Bridge station just a stone's throw away, offering national rail and underground connections, and Blackfriars not much further the other way, there aren't many places that are not in direct reach.

As well as trains, buses are frequent and can take residents anywhere they'd like to go in the city, north or south.

By car, things are a little more difficult with limited parking. However, driving out of London to the south is actually relatively painless at off-peak times and can be faster than getting a train.

Local shops

Obviously, Borough Market is the first thing worth talking about when discussing Borough's amenities. It offers a wide array of food, drink and culture throughout the week. On Saturdays, it is particularly busy with tourists, but still worth wandering around. It is also home to several excellent pubs, most famous of which is The Market Porter. It is exceptionally pleasant to walk around Borough Market, it's easy to feel as though you’ve wandered onto the set of a film with its romantic and picturesque setting.

There are many excellent cafes, restaurants, pubs and bars throughout Blackpool, with a huge amount of variety to suit any taste.

Shoppers will find Houndshill Shopping Centre more than sufficient. It sits conveniently close to the Promenade and has all the expected high street brands. Beyond the confines of the Shopping Centre, a little off the beaten track, are plenty of independent stores and boutiques, as well as trendy designer outlets.
