The local area guide to living in St Agnes

St Agnes is a large village on the beautiful north coast of Cornwall. A very popular tourist destination, it is just 10 miles down the coast from busy Newquay. It sits within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and has been labeled a World Heritage Site.

The village, and the area around it, is home to many sites of archaeological and geological interest. Ancient signs of human habitation, some up to 10,000 years old, have been discovered near way. Mining has clearly been a big part of the history of St Agnes, with Bronze Age barrows common in the local landscape. There are also Iron Age forts and mines scattered around.

St Agnes continued to be an important mining spot throughout the middle ages and into industrial times, alongside fishing and farming. However, soon after the first world war the mining industry began to shrink and by the 1950s the economy had changed due to the steady decline of the Cornish mining industry.

These days, the industrial shortfall is made up for by the tourism industry. St Agnes's pretty streets, spectacular landscape and numerous sites of historical interest make it very attractive to visitors from elsewhere in the UK and abroad.

Information about the local residents

According to the 2011 census, 4,500 people currently live in St Agnes. The village has a very close knit, artistic community.
