The local area guide to living in Crickhowell

The attractive town of Crickhowell is nestled within the Usk Valley, near to the stunning region of the Black Mountains in Wales, and takes its name from Crug Hywel, a nearby hill fort thought to be from the Iron Age. The town is near to the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park and boasts a lively little community with a great selection of shops on the high street, many of which are still family run. Crickhowell has some impressive landmarks, such as a 17th century bridge that spans the river and the impressive ruins of Crickhowell Castle. Being so close to the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains, Crickhowell is wonderful for those who love being outdoors and enjoy activities such as walking, climbing, fishing and mountain biking.

At the 2011 census, Crickhowell had 2,063 residents. People aged between 45 and 59 make up the largest group in the town, with 46 years being the average age of the population. The town is not very ethnically diverse and has a larger amount of people born in the UK than the national average.

Crickhowell Community Primary School has 232 pupils of mixed gender, around 5% of who are eligible for school meals, which is significantly lower than the national average. The school was rated in a recent inspection as being ‘good’ and was singled out for praise regarding its pupil’s wellbeing. Crickhowell High School was rated in a recent inspection report as being ‘good’ and is the best performing secondary school in the area of Powys. The school was noted for its ability to ‘prepare pupils effectively for the opportunities and responsibilities of adult life.

Getting around

The A40 runs through the centre of Crickhowell, towards the large market town of Abergavenny in the south and Brecon to the north. The nearest motorway junction is on to the M4 at Newport, a journey of around 25 miles. There is a regular bus service to Brecon, Abergavenny and Cardiff. Crickhowell doesn’t have its own train station; the nearest is six miles away in Abergavenny, with services to Manchester and Birmingham via Newport and Hereford.

Crickhowell has all the hallmarks of a classic Welsh market town: handsome buildings, beautiful surroundings, cosy pubs and a great selection of independent shops. One of the most picturesque buildings is The Bear Hotel, an ancient coaching inn that still has its archway and cobbled square. The bustling high street reflects the strong community spirit of the town and boasts a quirky old fashioned department store named Webbs, gift shops, small independent clothing boutiques, bookshops and a shop selling outdoor and adventure equipment. There is an emphasis on locally sourced food in the town, with a nice selection of delis and shops such as the Welsh Venison Centre, Beacons Farm Shop and the award-winning Black Mountains Smokery. Those who enjoy eating out will be spoilt for choice, as there are many establishments to choose from, such as the Italian influences Yummy Kitchen, The Bear Hotel, which specialises in locally sourced produce, and, for those with a sweet tooth, the Pavlova Ice Cream Parlour.
