The local area guide to living in Ewshot

The quiet village of Ewshot, located in Hampshire, near to the Surrey border, is the perfect choice for commuters or young families. With its leafy, tree-lined streets presenting a lovely atmosphere for children and adults alike and its village hall continuing to provide for the social and pastoral needs of its residents, Ewshot is a great example of village living which retains convenient links to larger urban settlements such as Farnham, London and Basingstoke.

Although Ewshot was mentioned in the Domesday Book, the village has its origins as a humble tithing of the Manor of Itchel, and was not recognisable as a modern settlement until the mid-1800s. It evolved into the village it is today for a number of reasons; the opening of a local school, the building of its 18th century church, St Mary’s, and the breakup of the Ewshot estate, which gave the village its independence in 1876. The village also has its own recreation ground, complete with swings, a flying fox aerial slide and picnic facilities. Ewshot Riding Club, located within the village, hosts regular events open to both members and non-members alike.

Information about the local residents

The village has a population of 635 residents distributed amongst 232 households, according to the 2011 National Census. The majority of its residents are between the ages of 41 and 60, with a sizeable proportion of 0 to 20 year olds, perhaps demonstrating the popularity of the area with young families. Ewshot’s residents are very healthy, with 87% claiming to have good or very good levels of health.

The area is prosperous, located as it is in the comfortable county of Hampshire, and this is reflected in the figures for property ownership reported in the most recent census, with 89% owning their own homes. Only 1% of the working age population is unemployed, and about 20% are retired.

St Polycarp’s Catholic Primary School in Farnham is another excellent option for young children, with an “outstanding” report in its most recent Ofsted inspection.

For older children, All Hallows Catholic School, catering to children aged 11 to 18, was judged to be “outstanding” in its most recent Ofsted report. Exam results at All Hallows have been deemed to be excellent and the school has been praised for the way in which pupils are each treated according to their individual needs.
