The local area guide to living in Gunnersbury

Gunnersbury is an attractive residential area near west London, boasting excellent transportation links both into the city and out. It’s close to other popular areas of Acton, Brentford and Chiswick and just four miles away from the luxury London hotspot of Kensington.

The area boasts a broad range of family homes, a selection of great schools, plus fantastic amenities – many of which are situated on Chiswick’s High Street. You’ll also find a great leisure facility, fantastic attractions, and the Gunnersbury Triangle Nature Reserve, just a stone’s throw from Chiswick Park Tube Station. There are also a number of family-friendly festivals here in the Gunnersbury / Chiswick area - the annual Bedford Park Festival, held every June, being one of them.

Census data for the Gunnersbury area was last collected in the 2011 census. At this time, Gunnersbury had a population of 10,742. Just 38% lived in houses – the rest of the population living in flats, maisonettes or apartments. While the population was predominantly white (76%), other ethnicities included Asian or Asian British, Black or Black British and Chinese.

Work prospects were good for residents here in Gunnersbury. Over two thirds were in some form of employment and just 4.1% of the population unemployed. The population in the Gunnersbury area was relatively young too – with just 8.3% of the local population retired. With Chiswick Business Park nearby, and home to companies including Paramount Pictures, Singapore Airlines and Swarovski, there are plenty of opportunities in the nearby area.

Nearby schools

Whatever age your children are, there is a wealth of fantastic educational establishments here in the Gunnersbury area. There are several schools and nurseries for younger children. These include the Elmwood Montessori School, a popular pre-school for children up to the age of five, Belmont Primary School, on Belmont Road, and Grove Park Primary School, a primary rated “outstanding” by Ofsted. Green Dragon Primary is another popular option and has been rated “good” by Ofsted. The latest Ofsted report highlighted “outstanding leadership and management”, which has helped the school improve its offerings rapidly.

The secondary school choices here are just as good. Gunnersbury Catholic School is a boys-only comprehensive in nearby Brentford, while Brentford School for Girls offers girls-only education. One of the mixed comprehensives is Acton High School on Gunnersbury Lane. Rated “good” by Ofsted, the school’s latest report highlights the achievements of the school’s sixth form and good teaching.

Getting around

Gunnersbury is located in Zone 3 of the London Underground, ensuring quick and easy transportation across London. It’s ideal for commuters travelling into the city to work. Gunnersbury residents will have two tube stations to choose from - Acton Town and Gunnersbury - both of which are well connected to the city. Gunnersbury station serves as a London Underground and London Overground station and is served by District line trains and London Overground trains on the North London Line.

Rail travel is convenient too – with Gunnersbury station and South Acton station conveniently located nearby. Gunnersbury station offers transport into London as well as Upminster, Stratford and Richmond. Alternatively, you could hop on one of the local buses, which operate into central London and beyond.

Local shops

You needn’t travel far to get your weekly groceries. There’s a Sainsbury’s nearby for all your major food purchases and a Budgens for all those daily essentials. Chiswick Farmers and Fine Food Market is another great place to shop groceries, with fresh local produce on sale every Sunday morning from 10am until 2pm.

The best local shopping is found on Chiswick High Street, a 10 minute walk away. Here you’ll find cafes, high street shops and independent stores as well as a wide variety of restaurants. Of course, London’s best shopping spots aren’t far away either. Kensington High Street is a short tube or bus journey away and Westfield shopping mall is just a few miles away too – and only 20 minutes by car. So whether you’re looking for luxury, independent boutiques or all your favourite shops under one roof, there’s plenty of choice nearby.
