The local area guide to living in Llandinam

Right in the heart of central wales lies Llandinam, a beautiful village and community in Powys. The community consists of Llandinam, Plas Dinam, Little London and a smattering of small farms. Situated on the A470 road which runs from Cardiff to Glan Conwy, Llandinam is a desirable locale for many as nearby settlements can be reached with ease for work or leisure purposes.

The town of Newton, which is the largest in Powys, is a mere 14-minute drive away. Caersws is only 4 minutes away and is where the nearest train station can be found. The seaside (Aberystwyth) can be reached in under 1 hour and the majestic wonder of Snowdonia National Park can be frequented in just 1 hour and 15 minutes. These proximities continue to attract folk looking for a quiet locale with excellent transport links.

Information about the local residents

The village’s most notable resident was David Davies, an entrepreneur and industrialist. His statue stands proudly in Llandinam and his beautiful mansion, Broneirion, is now a grade 2 listed building and currently owned by Girlguiding Cymru, a charity helping young women in the UK.

Back when the 2011 Census was recorded, 1,405 were noted as residing in Llandinam. These residents are divided into 587 households. The majority of households, 72% to be precise, are detached properties. This is fantastic for those seeking a spacious home with outdoor space at an affordable price!

Nearby schools

Families wishing to relocate to Llandinam will find that the village is home to one school - a primary level institute. Llandinam C.P. School currently has 57 pupils on its roll, who are between the ages of 3 to 11. The school was rated ‘Good’ by Estyn back in May 2013. They praised the quality of teaching and the supportive learning environment. They further went on to mention how pupils tend to achieve well.

As there are no secondary level schools in Llandinam, children will have to venture into either Llanidloes or Newtown. Llanidloes High School and Newtown High School offer secondary and post 16 education and both institutes illustrate excellent pupil attainments. At Llanidloes, 89% achieve 3 core subjects, 54% achieve the Level 2 threshold and 100% achieve the Level 3 threshold – these figures are much higher than the national average!

Getting around

Though Llandinam sits in a rather rural location, it boasts attractive road, bus and train links. As mentioned prior, the village sits on the A470, which provides quick connections to Newtown, Cardiff, Shrewsbury and Caersws. At Caersws, trains can be caught to Aberystwyth and Shrewsbury.

A number of buses also take residents to the connecting neighbourhoods. The X75 service, provided by Celtic Travel, ferry passengers to Caersws, Newtown and Shrewsbury. A national express service, which runs from Aberystwyth to London, also passes through the village and offers affordable, long distance travel. However, most residents typically rely on their cars to get them from A to B, as train and bus services are quite infrequent.

Local shops

The local amenities available in Llandinam may not resemble the likes found in bigger cities. But don’t worry, you’ll find a post office and The Lion Hotel. The latter is known for its utterly sublime meals, a pit stop here is, therefore, highly recommended.

For more choice, Newtown can be frequented. A number of fantastic diners, cafes and independent shops can be found here. If, however, you are on the hunt for High Street favourites, Bear Lanes Shopping Centre houses brands such as New Look and Dorothy Perkins. You can also complete your weekly food shop at one of the food stores within the town!

Back in Llandinam, the village hall is a great place to socialise with the locals. Many functions such as cinema screenings and drama productions help unite the already close-knit community.
