Stanstead Abbotts is a village situated along the River Lea in the south-east corner of Hertfordshire. It sits on the border with Essex, just an hour’s drive from the north of London. The village of Stanstead St Margarets is located just across the river, and because the villages are so close, many residents of Stanstead St Margarets also use the Stanstead Abbotts postal address.

With a thriving community spirit, numerous shops, independent services, and a convenient location, Stanstead Abbotts is a desirable village for commuters, families and pensioners alike.

Along the Riverside Green, the local park, sit Meridian obelisks to mark the point of the Greenwich Meridian. This line passes directly through the village. Riverside Green also offers contemporary art and tranquil pathways to stroll along. Further recreational facilities include a children’s play area and the wildlife area known as The Meadow.

Within the village boundaries, the population of Stanstead Abbotts was just under 2,000 at the time of a 2004 count. The full Stanstead Abbotts ward boasted a population of 3,077 at the time of the 2011 census, including areas of a few neighbouring villages as well. There are several schools in and around Stanstead Abbotts. At primary level, these include St Andrew’s CofE Primary, which also includes an infant school and is linked to the St Andrew’s Church. In the most recent Ofsted report the school was rated ‘Good’ and the behaviour of the children ‘Outstanding’.

Amwell View School and Specialist Sports College caters for students from the ages of 2 through 19, providing a multi-disciplinary approach with the assistance of therapists. At secondary level there is the John Warner School, and All Nations College, known for being the filming location of ‘The Belles of St Trinian’s’. This independent evangelical Bible College is located in Easneye.

Getting around

One of Stanstead Abbotts’ greatest strengths is its abundance of transport links. A half-hourly train service into London runs from St Margarets Station, which is situated on the Hertford East to Liverpool Street Line. A number of bus routes are also available, linking the village with neighbouring towns as well as central London. Bus routes include the 351, 524, 311, and C3. It’s also popular to cycle to London along the towpath that runs through the village. Motorists will find the A10 within close reach, which links to the M25. The A414 and M11 are also in close proximity.

Local shops

Stanstead Abbotts offers a traditional, bustling High Street packed with both brand name retailers and independent shops alike. This includes newsagents, sandwich shops, estate agents, a Co-operative supermarket, and the Village Pharmacy. There is an ATM and Post Office branch within the Co-op. There are also several hairdressers and barber shops to keep residents looking stylish.

The Village Pantry is a cosy stop offering freshly baked goods and expertly prepared cups of coffee or tea. There are also a number of recreational areas within Stanstead Abbotts, including the St Margaretsbury Sports Club and Recreational Ground for cricket, football and tennis facilities.

The Water Gardens in nearby Harlow is an attractively landscaped open-air shopping centre featuring banks and High Street clothing chains. Further shopping centres in the area include The Pavilions and Brookfield Retail Park.
