Farncombe is a village in the civil parish of Godalming, in the district of Waverley, Surrey. The area’s tranquility and natural beauty has seen it used as a shooting location for various Hollywood films throughout the years. Farncombe doesn’t just look beautiful on camera however; in 2013 Godalming was crowned one of the best places to live in the UK, with its residents enjoying the best overall quality of life in the country.

Though Farncombe is making a name for itself in the 21st Century, it has a deep history that spans hundreds of years. The area is referenced in the Domesday Book, though it is called Fernecome, and is also home to Grade I listed Almshouses dating back to 1622.

The Godalming Farncombe and Cattshall ward is one of five that make up the civil parish of Godalming. This ward has a median age of 40 and a population of 4600 according to the 2011 National Census. 50.1% of this population consider themselves to be in very good health, surpassing averages of the south east (49%) and England as a whole (47.2%). 61% of the residents of Farncombe are Christian while 30% have no religion. Interestingly, while 28 people are either Buddhist, Hindu Jewish or Muslim, almost as many people are followers of lesser known religions.

37.4% of the ward have Level 4 qualifications or above while 18.9% have no qualifications at all. Almost a quarter of the residents are in professional occupations with 14.6% of the work force in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations. Retail makes up the largest chunk of the work force at 15.2%, with the next being 11.4% who work in education. Schools in Farncombe; Ladybird Nursery, Farncombe Infants Primary School and Broadwater Secondary School, can facilitate children from pre-school up to Year 11. Both Farncombe Infants and Broadwater were judged to be “Good” by Ofsted in their 2012 inspections.

Getting around

Bus routes 46, 70, 71 and 72 run in Farncombe at least once per hour, five days a week. The 42, 503 and 523 also run in the area, albeit less frequently. The 694, PT3 and PT4 run only on school days while the 43 operates exclusively during sixth form college terms. Farncombe and Godalming both have railway stations running on South Western Trains. These trains travel from London Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour, with Waterloo only 40 minutes away.

Farncombe is close to the A3 road, giving the residents of the village relatively easy access to London by car. The M25 is relatively nearby also, further extending the area’s accessibility to other parts of the country.

There are a variety of shopping options and activities available for the residents of Farncombe. Florists, tattoo shops, a Co-op, bakeries, butchers and piano stores line the streets, managing to meet a wide variety of the residents’ needs. The local pubs are The Leathern Bottle, Three Lions, The Cricketers, The Charterhouse, White Hart and The Freeholders which are within walking distance of the village centre and offer a warm and friendly environment for their guests.

The Farncombe Fun Zone is an aptly named games centre aimed at young children and the young at heart. Farncombe Boat House, Godalming Leisure Centre, Broadwater Park, Guildford & Godalming Rugby Club, Godalming Leisure Centre and Farncombe Cricket Club all provide the area with various activities and exciting days out.
