West Bergholt is a rural village in Essex, situated near the border of Suffolk and the ancient town of Colchester. West Bergholt offers a rich history and many pre-historic, Iron Age and Roman articles have been discovered throughout the village. This includes Palaeolithic axes and coins. In 1977, an archaeological dig found evidence of a Bronze Age cemetery south of Chitts Hill Bridge. Tools and pottery found dated back to 1500 and 100 BC. The Old St Mary’s Church, located within the village, is a listed grade I church that offers another glimpse into the village history with some of its original structure dating back to the Saxon period.

The village also has the Hillhouse Wood with picturesque woodland surroundings as well as local shops. The village is a closely connected community that is welcoming to all. There will be no problem joining the community with the many clubs West Bergholt has to offer.

Getting around

The village has access bus routes that can take residents to explore local towns and cities like Colchester (perfect for shopping). Buses that are available include the No. 17, 66, 67B and the 754. The No. 66 is the most regular service coming every half an hour and the No. 17 provides a school service.

West Bergholt is also near to three railway stations; Colchester Railway Station (3 miles South East), Chappel and Wakes Colne Railway Station (3 miles West) and Marks Tey Railway Station (3 miles South West).

The A12 is a short distance away, providing commuters with access to other parts of the country.

Local shops

West Bergholt is home to many local shops including collectible shops, a Co-op and hair salons amongst other local businesses. You can take a stroll in the beautiful Hillhouse Woods; perfect for those who enjoy a relaxing walk with nature. Keep your eyes peeled for deer!

The oldest pub in the village, The White Hart, is a wonderful place to eat with family and friendly locals. Other pubs include the Treble Tile and the Queen’s Head; both offer food and entertainment.

The West Bergholt Social Club is definitely worth a visit. There are activities to take part in from Bingo Night to live music on the weekends and installed with Sky Sports too.
