The local area guide to living in Knowle

Knowle, a charming village, lies on the fringe of the West Midlands conurbation. Approximately 3 miles south-east of Solihull and 18 miles south-east of Birmingham, Knowle is part of the picturesque county of Warwickshire and the borough of Solihull. Despite its proximity to such major hubs, it successfully retains its rural, relaxing charm – one of the reasons many seek a home here.

Knowle is, in fact, one of the most prosperous villages in the Midlands. The excellent schools, transport links and homely feel all aid its image as a cathartic retreat from the pedestrian-packed, noise polluted streets of larger hubs. If you decide to move here, community spirit certainly prevails. Most locals often find themselves partaking in one of the numerous clubs the village boasts. From Hockey to scout and church groups, clubs cater for all ages and preferences.

The recreation areas further provide locals with the perfect spot to have a quick respite. Laze on the freshly manicured grass in Jobs Close Park or intrepidly explore the Knowle Locks - a series of locks near the canal bridge.

Information about the local residents

In the ward of Knowle, according to the 2011 Census, 10, 678 individuals call the picturesque village home. The residents are split into 4,475 households – which 82% either own outright or with a mortgage.

As mentioned above, the brilliant schools and convenient transport links attract families into the area. As the village lies close to the M42 motorway and on the A4141 road, commuters are also lured into the rural village. 47% of locals are in employment and most either commute to the central hub of Birmingham or the nearby town of Solihull for work.

Nearby schools

Though only two schools exist in Knowle, they are both exemplary institutions and part of the reason families fall further in love with the village.

Knowle Church of England Primary Academy caters for children between the ages of 3-11 and boasts extraordinary pupil attainments, as well as, stellar praise from Ofsted, the education authority. Back in 2012, Ofsted deemed the school ‘Outstanding’ and admired the quality of teaching present. If, however, you prefer not to send your child to a faith school, Dorridge Primary School in nearby Dorridge boasts similar feats.

Arden Secondary School is the second institution present in the village. Like Knowle CofE and Dorridge Primary, this institute also boasts an ‘Outstanding’ rating from Ofsted (when they last inspected the school in 2008) and brilliant pupil achievements. 83% of students gain at least 5 A*-C GCSEs and 98% achieve at least 3 or more A –levels!

Getting around

The village rests on the A4141 road, which goes through the town of Solihull to Five Ways, and the M42 motorway takes motorists directly to Birmingham. Those who live here, therefore, own a car to transport themselves to where they need to be.

Unfortunately, the village is not home to a railway station. The nearest ones can be found in Dorridge, Hampton-in-Arden and Birmingham, which are all 15 minutes away by car or bus. From Birmingham International Railway station, London Euston can be reached with ease.

Buses are another convenient mode of transportation. Several buses serve the village and take locals and commuters to the nearby villages, towns and cities. And don’t forget, Birmingham International Airport is situated near the railway station and boasts charter flights to a wide array of national and international destinations!

Local shops

The bustling high street of Knowle is home to a delightful mix of stores. From charity shops to a Tesco metro and some of the area’s best diners, the village’s offering is more than sufficient. If, however, you seek brand names, the town of Solihull or even the dazzling stores and retail outlets of Birmingham can be frequented.
