The local area guide to living in West Wittering

The quaint village of West Wittering is a civil parish located on the Manhood Peninsula – which can be found in the Chichester district in West Sussex. West Wittering lies close to the mouth of the Chichester Harbour and boasts a sandy beach which is incredibly popular with tourists in the warmer summer months. Excellent water quality and great facilities have made West Wittering beach one of the best Blue Flag beaches in the country.

The area surrounding West Wittering beach is recognised internationally for its birds, wildlife and stunning beauty. Chichester Harbour, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, falls partly within the parish of West Wittering. The wetland is a Special Protection Area for wild birds and is also a Special Conservation Area.

Information about the local residents

The Census of 2011 revealed that there are currently 2,672 people residing in West Wittering. Interestingly, this figure represents a drop in population of 121 people since the Census of 2001 was conducted 10 years beforehand. These residents are split into 1,352 households – all of which reside in unshared dwellings, with the most prevalent household space being detached houses.

Unsurprisingly, considering the village’s quiet seaside location, West Wittering is a popular living destination among retirees. A very high proportion of West Wittering’s population – 47% in fact – are of a pensionable age.

Nearby schools

The village of West Wittering is home to only one school. West Wittering Parochial CofE School currently educates 107 pupils from the ages of 4 to 11. Of these pupils, 76% manage to achieve Level 4 in maths, reading and writing by the time they leave the school at age 11. During its most recent visit, educational standards authority Ofsted granted the school a rating of ‘Good’.

While there is only one primary school in West Wittering itself, there is another primary school just down the road in East Wittering. East Wittering Community Primary School currently has 237 pupils on its roll and 85% of these students manage to achieve Level 4 in maths, reading and writing by the time they leave the school. Ofsted also awarded the school a rating of ‘Good’.

Unfortunately, there is no secondary level school available in West Wittering. That being said, there are a handful of decent high schools in nearby Chichester, so teenage students will most likely find that they have to head there in order to attend school each day.

Getting around

There are a number of bus services operating in West Wittering that are available to take residents to settlements in the surrounding area. These destinations include East Wittering, Bracklesham, Birdham, Somerley and of course, Chichester.

There is no train station in West Wittering, although Chichester station is a mere 20 minute drive away – traffic permitting. From the station, commuters will be able to catch trains into London, Brighton, Portsmouth and Southampton. Trains into London Victoria take around two hours to complete the journey.

The majority of residents in West Wittering own at least one car, so those looking to relocate to the seaside village will most likely find that a car of their own will come in handy.

Local shops

West Wittering is home to a number of local shops including a butchers, news agents and a small handful of delightful restaurants, pubs and cafes. However, West Wittering does not have a supermarket of its own – meaning residents will most likely find that they have to head to nearby Chichester in order to complete their weekly shop. Chichester is home to a number of supermarkets including, but not limited to, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Co-Operative.

Residents may also find that the availability of items other than food are also rather limited in West Wittering. In order to find high street brands such as Topshop, River Island and Boots, you will also need to make the 20-minute journey into Chichester.
