The local area guide to living in Winlaton

Nestled in the borough of Gateshead, Winlaton is positioned directly South of the neighbouring town of Blaydon. The two settlements are linked by adjoining modern housing estates. It looms over the River Tyne at a height of 450 feet, offering sweeping views of the vales and villages below. Winlaton’s history is closely tied to the local steel industry. It was where nail manufacturer Ambrose Crowley set up furnaces, and still retains one of the oldest forges in the world. The Crowley works were well known for their iron goods, and the gates of Buckingham Palace were forged here.

Today’s village offers an attractive high street, with a charming variety of public houses, takeaways, and shops. The Winlaton Centre hosts fitness classes, youth clubs, and community events, and there are two parish churches in the village. The churchyard is run by the District Council, offering a wide open public space. There’s also thick woodland nearby, and the Super Dene Wood sits across the river from Winlaton. It’s part of Gibside Estate, which hosts an impressive farmer’s market.
