Positioned in the heart of England’s North West region, Greater Manchester comprises ten boroughs including the City of Manchester. It offers a wealth of cultural attractions including the Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester Art Gallery, and Manchester Library. Widely considered to be England’s second capital, Manchester has undergone a period of rapid growth in recent years.

Economically, Manchester is booming, with £2.3 billion pounds of property investment moving into it over the past two years. Whether you’re a first-time home buyer or are looking to move your way up the property ladder, new homes in Manchester offer a wealth of options.

Local investment and schemes

Salford Council’s Greengate Regeneration scheme is one major project underway in Greater Manchester. The Greengate sits on the Salford – Manchester border, and is the medieval centre of the old city of Salford.

The private sector has invested £110 million thus far to create 800 new residential units. To compliment this the council spent £13.3 million on a public Greengate Square refurbishment to help transform the area.

Manchester City Council has outlined an ambitious strategy to build at least 25,000 new homes over the next 10 years, to meet the city’s high growth rate. The Residential Growth Strategy is a new scheme that will help increase building on new and existing sites while improving the city’s housing quality.

The strategy aims to work with Manchester Place and developers to include homes for first time buyers, while creating neighbourhoods that will keep growing families in the city.

Major developments: New homes

Salford is one area that’s being heavily developed with new homes due to schemes like those mentioned above. Bridgewater Point is one desirable development offering both apartments and townhouses. It will offer a roof terrace, onsite gymnasium, and underground parking.

X1 Property Developments specialises in luxury apartment buildings, with their crown jewel being their residential towers in Media City.

Manchester’s Media City is home to BBC and ITV, making it an ideal location for this development which will include 1100 apartments, a gym, and a cinema.

New Islington is another hotspot within Manchester for development. While many new builds are apartments, there are also houses available.

Urban Splash created a new concept known as hoUSe here, allowing you to design your own floor plan. This lets you maximise the space to best suit your own living needs, whether that’s more bathrooms to suit a growing family or a large open-plan work space to suit a freelance work career. Urban Splash has also completed the Chips development in this same neighbourhood, with an architectural design surrounded by three canals. It features its own health centre, park, and marina, as well as 142 apartments. The homes are available to buy, rent, or obtain through shared ownership.

Major developments: Redevelopments

Many of Manchester’s historic buildings have been redeveloped and converted into residential units. The Northern Quarter is the prime location for this type of property, for those seeking a trendy atmosphere.

The beauty of converted flats like these is that you get all of the charm of a character property combined with the convenience of a modern new build. Finlay’s Warehouse is a recent conversion. This Grade II listed building was once home to a famous cabaret star, but has now been converted to 27 apartments of varying sizes.

Local commuter hubs

Those seeking larger detached properties can find a treasure trove of new developments in communities just outside of the city centre.

Ashton-under-Lyne is a market town tucked between Manchester and the Peak District, popular with commuters for its quaint atmosphere and good schools. It’s home to the Stamford Gate development from Taylor Wimpey, featuring mews, townhouse, semi-detached, and detached homes. Gleeson’s Mackeson Park development is also located here in close proximity to the M60.

Nantwich is another market town popular with commuters, boasting its own distinct personality. There are numerous new builds here, including the Malbank Water development from Barratt Homes and the prestigious Oaklands development from Taylor Wimpey.
