The Alicante area guide

Alicante, best known for its tourism, has more to offer than long sandy beaches, clear waters, and endless lists of activities to keep everyone entertained. Alicante is also soaked in history with castles, churches, fortifications, and museums on offer. A location dating back thousands of years, the city is set in the famous Costa Blanca region on the south east coast of Spain, where sun and warm weather are almost guaranteed. For years, tourists from all over Spain and Europe have flocked to the region to enjoy the best of Spanish hospitality.

Things to do

If you haven’t already visited the area, you’re bound to know someone who has. This city has so much to offer it’s no wonder it draws in thousands of tourists each year. The first things you will always hear about is the magnificent beaches that Alicante has to offer. Playa del Postiguet is the main beach in Alicante and at the heart of the region, with white beaches and safe waters for anyone wanting to soak up the Costa Blanca sun. Other beaches nearby include Playa del Coco - smaller in size to Playa del Postiguet but equally as beautiful. Further out you can find Juan Beach where you can enjoy many activities both on and off the water.

If the beaches are the first thing you’ll hear about then the nightlife has to be the second. As a city which has tailored itself to tourists, there’s very little Alicante can’t offer. From family affairs to nights out with your friends, there’s almost nothing Alicante doesn’t accommodate for. For those looking for day time entertainment away from the beach, Alicante has parks, golf courses, day trips, culinary tours, bike tours, boating trips, and much, much more.

For those wanting to enjoy the rich history of the area and take a day away from the sea and sand, you won’t be disappointed. Even if you’re not a history buff, the Castle of Santa Barbara sitting aloft Mount Benacantil is a must for anyone visiting Alicante. This castle is one of the oldest part of the city and offers its visitors a view of the city guaranteed to take your breath away. Add to this a long list of churches, museums, and parks, you’ll be hard pushed to decide what to do first. In short, Alicante has something for everyone and enough to keep you busy for a lifetime.

Places to eat

As a city based on tourism it’s easy to find any type of food your heart desires. With the influence of tourism comes the arrival of food from all over Europe and beyond. You can find restaurants and eateries almost everywhere in Alicante, and with such demand and competition, the quality can be outstanding. For those looking for a more local flavour, Alicante has traditional Spanish and Tapas restaurants in abundance. To really get the best possible culinary experience, looking into joining a Tapas trail and enjoy the best that these restaurants have to offer.

Alicante boasts no less than six shopping centres including an outlet shopping centre, for those wanting to broaden their wardrobe. With all the kind of stores you’d expect in a major Spanish city, you won’t be short on choice. The city also offers a large selection of supermarkets and bespoke shops for residents and holidaymakers alike, providing anything you could need for place in the sun.

Getting there and around

Alicante is incredibly well connected with a dedicated airport regularly servicing multiple UK and European destinations, local and national rail taking you to major transportation hubs in Spain, electric trams which can take you to nearby destinations such as Benidorm, and regular ferry services to nearby locations such as the Balearic Islands. A car is useful for those wanting to explore the surrounding region, but for Alicante itself, the transportation links are more than sufficient.
