Elche is a town located in Eastern Spain, just 27.5 km away from Alicante, and is the capital of the El Baix district. The population for Elche stands at roughly 228,647: It is the third most populous city after Valencia and Alicante in the Valencian Community and the 20th biggest city in the whole of Spain. Elche has had a long history of different rulers, with the Greeks initially forming a settlement in 600 BC, followed by the Carthaginians, the Romans, and then the Moors, who have left the largest imprint on the city. King James II of Aragon ended the Moorish reign in the 13th century during the Reconquista.

Things to Do

Elche is a very scenic region of Spain and has an incredible 200,000 palm trees dotted all over the place, only adding to its exotic appearance. The palm trees are known as the Palmeral of Elche, and this is considered a UNESCO heritage site, since the turn of the century. Nature lovers can witness an abundance of palm trees at the Huerto del Cura (Priest's Garden), as well as numerous other exotic plants set in this beautifully serene environment. The garden also has the incredible Imperial Palm Tree, which has seven branches coming from one trunk. Although Elche is primarily mainland, there are a number of beaches in its municipality, such as Les Pesquers and El Pinet La Marina, only a 15-minute drive away.

There are numerous places in Elche where the Arab rule is still prevalent to this day, particularly in Vila Murada, where the buildings and streets are all mainly Moorish constructions. The 12th century Baños Arabes can also be found in Elche, and are open to the public from Tuesdays to Saturdays. Festa d'Elx is a medieval festival that takes place in the city each year and has something for everyone – from exhibitions, music and fireworks to marketplaces, performances and entertainment for kids. The festival is a real cultural feast, and was awarded the Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
