The local area guide to living in Warrington

Warrington, in Cheshire, North West England, is a town sitting beside the River Mersey. It is equidistant from Liverpool and Manchester, 20 miles from each.

Originally populated by the Romans who saw it as a vital crossing point of the river, it was taken over by the Saxons in time, and by the medieval centuries was a significant market town. Its position, at a relatively easy crossing point, meant it was an important trading point long before the Industrial Revolution. It was also an important strategic point, and played a large part in the English Civil War. In fact, Oliver Cromwell stayed near the town centre at one stage and the walls of the parish church are scarred by cannon balls.

The growth of industry and introduction of the railway, however, changed the town greatly. It urbanized quickly and comprehensively, becoming a leading manufacturing town when it came to steel, textiles, tanning, and brewing. It continued expanding, even beyond World War II, and is still very important in the light industry, distribution, and technology sectors.

Throughout the town are some beautiful examples of architecture, including the Walton Hall, and some award-winning gardens. Despite its important industrial past it is still a pretty market town at heart and this shows.

Information about the local residents

Warrington has a population of 202,200 according to the 2011 census. 50.4% are female while 49.6% are male, and the town has a mean age of 39.5, which is about the same as the mean for England as a whole. It has a median age of 40, but proportionally has a larger number of children under 16 than the average for England.

Warrington is relatively prosperous, particularly when compared with other northern towns of its size. When ranked by social grade, a quarter of houses are classified as AB (which is higher than the average for England). 31.5% are C1, also higher than for England. Just 43% of households belong to social grades C2 or DE. 3.3% claim Jobseeker’s Allowance, and 13% of people are on benefits of any kind (slightly less than the rate for the country as a whole).

Property ownership is also fairly high. More than 70% of households are owner occupied (whether through a mortgage or owned outright) and only 10.2% of households are privately rented, far less than the figure for other towns in England. Education rates are also generally higher than other towns and cities in the region.

The inhabitants also report high levels of health: 50% of people describe their health as ‘very good’ while a further 32.8% say their health is ‘good’.

Nearby schools

Warrington has a huge selection of schools. There are nearly 70 primary schools in the borough, and 14 high schools. The largest of these is Great Sankey High School, which has more than 1800 pupils. It is co-educational, and unusually for schools in the area has its own sixth form. Its large size shouldn’t lead you to think it is not a high performer, it received an ‘Outstanding’ rating by Ofsted in 2010.

Warrington also has two colleges, Warrington Collegiate and Priestley Sixth Form. There is also a university campus from the University of Chester.

Getting around

Warrington’s industrial legacy has left it with excellent transport links, particularly by rail. There are two railway stations, Bank Quay on the West Coast Main Line between Glasgow and London, and Central which is on the Manchester to Liverpool line. There are several other smaller stations scattered around neighbouring boroughs.

It’s also convenient for people looking to travel by car. The M6, M56, and M62 motorways are all close by.

Local shops

While there are very large retail cities nearby like Manchester and Liverpool, Warrington has a lot to offer shoppers in its own right.

The town centre is greatly modernised with several large shopping malls, and some of the side streets have some excellent smaller stores. In particular, Buttermarket Street, Sankey Street, Bridge Street and Horsemarket Street are very popular with locals and visitors.
