The local area guide to living in Liverpool

Liverpool is a vibrant city with a big personality and a lot going on. It’s England’s third largest city and a historically important port town that boomed during the industrial revolution. It’s famed the world over, having produced some of the UK’s greatest musicians, writers, athletes and personalities, as well as being home to world famous Liverpool F.C.

It has some sites of architectural significance, with areas of the city having been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Its buildings span the architectural ages, showcasing Medieval, Tudor, Stuart, Victorian, 20th century and modernist designs.

Nowadays, Liverpool is thriving and has a large business sector, although industry has moved away from shipping towards service. It also has a lively cultural scene, with many clubs, theatres and music venues, large retail centres, and plenty of bars and restaurants.

Information about the local residents

The city of Liverpool has a population of almost 466,000 people, though this rises to about 2 million if the surrounding areas are included. Liverpool is a youthful town, with 42% of people being under the age of 30 - more than the national average. It’s an ethnically diverse place, with 90% of the population identifying as White British, 3% as Asian or Asian British, 2% mixed race, 2% Chinese and 2% as Black or Black British.

Due to its history as a major port, Liverpool has the oldest Chinese community in Europe, as well as the largest African and African-Caribbean communities in Britain. It has also long been popular with Welsh and Irish immigrants.

Nearby schools

Liverpool has an excellent reputation for schools, with a large number being rated as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, including The Beacon C of E Primary, and Everton Nursery School and Family Centre. There are also many excellent secondary schools, with The Belvedere Academy and West Derby School being classed as ‘outstanding’. The city is also home to the prestigious Liverpool Blue Coat School, which boasts the 30th best GCSE results in the UK.

Getting around

Being an important city and major urban area, Liverpool has excellent transport connections. It has two rail networks, Merseyrail, which runs local services, and the National Rail, which runs services to Newcastle, Birmingham, London and many other major destinations. The local network connects the city centre with places including Chester, Manchester, Southport, and Wigan. It carries more than 100,000 passengers every weekday and is the UK’s busiest commuter network outside of London.

Liverpool also has great road links, with the M62 running from the city and connecting it with Hull and Manchester. The A41 provides a direct link with Shropshire and Cheshire, and the A562 puts Warrington within easy reach. The city also benefits from a good bus service, with services running in the city centre and out towards the suburbs. The Liverpool One Bus Station is the main terminal for bus routes to the south of the city, and the Queen Square Bus Station serves the north and the west.

Whilst the port ferry isn’t nearly as busy as it was during its industrial heyday, it is still active and runs services to the Isle of Man and Ireland. There are also more local services that take passengers to destinations such as Birkenhead and Seacombe.

Liverpool has its own airport, called The John Lennon Airport, which has direct flights to destinations within the UK and Europe.

Local shops

Liverpool has a very impressive selection of shopping destinations. The largest of them all is the Liverpool ONE shopping centre. It’s located in the middle of the city, and hosts 160 outlets, housing mainly high street chains and department stores.

Metquarter has high-end fashion and beauty boutiques, though even more upmarket is Cavern Walls, where you can find brands such as Vivienne Westwood and Cricket. Liverpool also has a huge selection of eating and drinking opportunities, from recognisable high street establishments, to old school cafes and pubs that have stood the test of time.
