The Local Area Guide to Living in Cheadle

The charming village of Cheadle is tucked away in the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport and lies in close proximity to the city of Manchester. Amazingly, humans have lived in the area that modern-day Cheadle now occupies since prehistoric times - meaning that Cheadle is probably one of the oldest continuously settled places in the United Kingdom.

Cheadle experienced rapid growth during the Industrial Revolution and the Cheadle you will find today is a far cry from the Cheadle of yesteryear. These days, the village is home to dozens of young professionals and families and boasts a bustling high street packed with charming shops, cafes, pubs and all the trappings of modern life. Cheadle is even home to the global sportswear giant Umbro.

Information about the local residents

The Census of 2011 revealed that little under 14,700 people currently call the village of Cheadle home. Interestingly, this figure only represents a small increase of just over 400 since the 2001 Census was conducted. Cheadle's close proximity to the city of Manchester (only eight miles away) make it a great location for people who work in the city, but prefer the quieter lifestyle that living in a suburban village provides. There were recently 5,984 households listed as living in Cheadle, with the majority of these families residing in detached or semi-detached, unshared homes.

Nearby schools

Parents will be pleased to hear that the primary and secondary schools in Cheadle have all received good marks from educational standards authority, Ofsted. There are three primary schools and one secondary school in the immediate Cheadle area that parents can choose from when it comes to deciding where to send their children.

Meadowbank Primary School is the largest of its kind in the Cheadle area, with 411 students currently in attendance. Ofsted was overall very pleased with the educational practices employed at Meadowbank and awarded the school a rating of 'Good'. The smaller schools of Cheadle Primary and Ladybridge Primary also received a grade of 'Good' from Ofsted and are likely to be attractive choices for parents who are new to the area.

The Kingsway School is the only secondary school in the immediate vicinity of Cheadle and currently teaches 1,430 pupils who are between the ages of 11 and 16. As you have probably guessed from the fact that the oldest students at Kingsway are 16 - the school does not offer a sixth form. Students wishing to continue to sixth form level will have to enrol at nearby Cheadle and Marple Sixth Form College. Like the three primary schools in Cheadle, The Kingsway School was also awarded a grade of 'Good' when reviewed by Ofsted.

Getting around

If you compare the public transport on offer in London with that in Cheadle, the latter certainly will certainly look quite limited when it comes to choice. That being said, while there is only one mode of public transport available in Cheadle (it's the bus), it is reliable, extensive and usually pretty on time. Cheadle does not have its own train station, as rail services to the village ceased in 1964. Don't let this panic you, though, as there are a number of train stations in the nearby areas of Gatley, East Didsbury, Cheadle Hulme and Heald Green.

Local shops

Cheadle High Street is home to one of Stockport's more thriving shopping destinations. A great number of chain stores and independent shops stand side-by-side on the High Street, meaning residents are able to find everything from groceries to electrical goods and clothes to cafes.

If you discover you can't find what you are after in Cheadle itself, it pays to remember that the city of Manchester is only a short drive or bus ride away. Here you will easily be able to find stores like Topshop, Uniqlo, H&M and other fashionable retailers in which those trendy clothes that can't be sourced in Cheadle can be found.
