The Local Area Guide to Living in Blackpool

Blackpool is a famous seaside resort in Lancashire, the northwest of England. Blackpool was first noted in the Domesday Book, although it was just a small settlement by the sea until the 18th century, when it became fashionable for the wealthy to spend their summers by the coast. The Blackpool Tower is synonymous with the town and bears a striking resemblance in style to the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The Grade I listed building was built all the way back in 1894 and has been open to the public ever since. The opportunity to climb to the top of the tower and appreciate the stunning views of the promenade and the Irish Sea should not be missed; and it can be done by walking over five centimetre thick transparent glass.

The Blackpool Tower Circus is also at the site and features incredible acts from all over the world which will dazzle and entertain families of all ages, while the Blackpool Tower Ballroom is famous for its breath-taking interior and dance shows. The Opera House, one of the largest theatres in the whole of Europe, can be found in the Winter Gardens, where the Pavilion Theatre, the Spanish Hall, and Empress Ballroom can also be found.

The population in Blackpool stands at around 142,065, and it’s one of the most densely populated authorities in the UK. Those over 60 are more heavily represented here than in the rest of the nation, making up 26% of the population, with the national average currently sitting at 22%.

Getting Around

Blackpool is a very well connected place to live. There are very reliable bus services that function throughout the day and night that link to destinations such as Fleetwood, Bispham and Lytham. There is also the hugely popular and energy efficient tramway, that has a very frequent service, stretching out for 11 miles between Starr Gate and Fleetwood. The main train station is Blackpool North Railway Station, while there is also Blackpool South Railway Station which connects to Colne and Preston. The M55 motorway is the closest to Blackpool, and is 12.2 miles long, linking up with the M6 at Preston. Blackpool Airport can be located in Fylde, which is only just outside the borough of Blackpool.

Local Shops

Houndshill Shopping Centre is the primary shopping location in the centre of Blackpool, where over 40 different outlets can be found, such as Debenhams, Primark and H&M. There are also plenty of places to eat or have a coffee such as Just Desserts or Costa Coffee. Abingdon Street Market is a great destination to beat supermarket costs and hunt for bargains, while there are also a number of unique arts and crafts that can be found.

Litten Tree is a great place to grab a few drinks, as well as some pub grub. Pump & Truncheon is another nice venue to unwind, play some pool or watch live sports on a projector. Yorkshire Fisheries is a highly recommended place to sample some fresh and traditional Fish & Chips, as well as a number of other tasty options.
